Intuitive Painting
Whats that?
My (Sometimes) Creative Practice: Intuitive Painting
I’ve immersed myself in an online community dedicated to Intuitive Painting. It feels like a practice that sits right at the intersection of art therapy and pure, childlike play.
Unlike traditional art, this isn’t about technical precision or a “perfect” end product. It’s abstract, messy, and incredibly cathartic. The core philosophy is to simply get out of your own way.
In this space, I’m released from the pressure of:
Perfecting a self-portrait that looks like a photograph.
Painting a landscape where the clouds look real enough to touch.
Instead, it’s all about the process—releasing expectations and finding joy in the movement of the brush and the flow of the colors.

Unlocking Your Inner Child: A Guide to Messy, Intuitive Art
Sometimes the best art starts as a pile of paper and a few splats of paint. If you’re looking to reconnect with your creative spark, here are a few ways to let go and just play:
The “Let Go” Techniques
Switch It Up: Try drawing with your non-dominant hand to break the need for perfection.
Blind Creativity: Draw with your eyes closed and let your intuition guide the lines.
The Power of Three: Close your eyes, pick three random colors, and limit yourself to just those.
Mixed Media Play: Experiment with textures—try drawing with crayons first, then layering watercolor over the top for a resist effect.
Deconstruct & Rebuild: Don’t be afraid to cut or tear your work to transform it into a brand-new collage.
The Golden Rules
Have fun. 2. Make a mess.
Release the outcome. It is perfectly okay if you don’t want to share, hang, or give your work away.
The Reflection: Focus on the feeling. What did it feel like to create? Was it fun? Do you feel lighter or better than you did before you started?
Happy messy, intuitive art-making!
